WELCOME!
This website was designed for Dr. Cooper’s ENH295 Banned Books & Censorship course. Throughout this course I’ve read several novels that have been banned or challenged and learned the reasons why many books and authors are challenged. This website specifically looks at Harper Lee’s novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird” and the effects of censorship. I chose “To Kill a Mockingbird” for this solo project because it’s a wonderful classic to read. Lee depicts what life in the early 1930’s was like in Maycomb, Alabama, intriguing readers with the story of two younger children, Jem and Scout Finch.
“To Kill a Mockingbird” is listed as number four on the ALA or the American Library Associations “Banned and Challenged Classics” list. “To Kill a Mockingbird” was Harper Lee’s only published novel, winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 for this outstanding classic novel.
The purpose of this website is to educate on the banning and censorship of novels and explain the importance of literature in our society. We have the freedom of speech, so why not have the freedom to choose what we read? This website will also explain the reasons “To Kill a Mockingbird” was banned and depict the effects censorship has on publishers, authors, readers, and educators.
